International Women's Day 2020

February 5, 2020

What is International Women's Day?

International Women’s Day is a global event that celebrates and recognizes women’s achievements around the world. Its purpose is to raise the discussion of gender equality and has been celebrated since the early 1900s. International Women's Day takes place on March 8th. This day brings together communities, governments, businesses, and charities. Different countries celebrate in different ways and for some countries, it is a National holiday, in others, it is celebrated similarly to Mother’s Day.

Why is International Women's Day highlighted as an important event?

The World Economic Forum report states it could take over one hundred years for the gender gap in society and business to disappear. Women and men around the world highlight the importance of gender equality, celebrate diversity, raise awareness and a call for change and development on International Women's Day by supporting women's achievements and progress to date.

According to the United Nations, despite some progress being made towards gender equality in recent years, not one single country can claim that it has achieved it.  There are multiple obstacles in societies that remain unchanged in both law and culture.
The United Nations theme for International Women’s Day 2020 is: 'I am Generation Equality: Realizing Women’s Rights'. The theme is aligned with UN Women’s new multigenerational campaign, Generation Equality, which marks the 25th anniversary of the Beijing Declaration and Platform for Action. Adopted in 1995, at the Fourth World Conference on Women in Beijing, China, the Beijing Platform for Action is recognized as the most progressive roadmap for the empowerment of women and girls, everywhere.

International Women’s Day is 24 hours dedicated to championing women’s achievements and challenging gender bias.
