The United States Suspends Tariffs on Scotch Whisky and Other British Products

On January 1, 2021 the British government ended its retaliatory tariffs on Boeing and other United States goods, which were initially imposed by the European Union.

This was an effort to smooth over its relationship, though, the U.S. trade representative argued Britain did not have the legal standing to keep imposing these tariffs.

Since Britain left the European Union, it has sought to forge its own trade policy and secure a free-trade deal with the United States. In response, The United States will suspend retaliatory tariffs against Britain for four months, including up to 25 percent on Scotch Whisky. The two governments said they would use the time to try to come up with a long-term solution to the trade dispute. The decision will convey what the U.K. can do as an independent trading nation, to determine what will back businesses and support free and fair trade.
